Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was fostered by her mother grandmother and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford started to become fascinated by acting at the age of teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not the right fit for her. Ford later applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her debut on television in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
